The Elusive Dream of Homeownership for Canadians

The Staggering Reality

According to a recent CIBC survey, 76 per cent of propertyless Canadians believe that entering the housing market is an unattainable dream. These sobering statistics highlight a growing challenge in households will be available in the country.

A Glimmer of Hope

Despite feeling strongly out of reach, more than half (56 per cent) of this group remain optimistic, clinging to the dream of homeownership. But only 28 percent are saving towards expenses first, highlighting the major obstacles they face.

Overpriced Markets: The Largest Hurdle

The primary barrier to homeownership cited by 70 percent of non-homeowners is the prohibitive cost of overpriced markets nationwide. This factor is the inability to save for payments including a down payment (63 percent) creates a formidable barrier for would-be homeowners.

The Need for Guidance

Carissa Lucreziano, vice president of investment planning and advice at CIBC, acknowledges the broader challenges of affordable housing and the need for strategies. “Nearly 80 percent of our respondents said they need advice to help them enter the market,” she says, emphasizing the importance of financial guidance to achieving the dream of homeownership.  

Managing Mortgage Payments

For those who have already entered the housing market, the burden of managing mortgages is a major concern. Slightly more than half (51 per cent) of those on variable mortgages spend less than everyday expenses to manage their payments. In addition, 21 percent are following a proactive approach by paying off their mortgage faster through a one-time payment.

Preparing for Renewals

Those with fixed mortgages, on the other hand, are looking ahead and preparing for the influx of new housing. Almost 45 per cent expect to cut back on everyday spending, while 34 per cent plan to buy quality products, indicating an early approach to meeting their financial commitments.

Creative Alternatives

Faced with increasing challenges, Canadians are looking for creative alternatives to homeownership. The survey found that 48 per cent of respondents are considering moving to the suburbs for more affordable options. While 26 per cent are open to the idea of ​​buying with friends’ home to share the financial burden.

The Ongoing Struggle

While a large proportion of Canadians continue to avoid the dream of homeownership, the challenges of overpriced markets and lack of savings to pay premiums remain. Financial institutions and planners should recognize the urgency of this issue and offer guidance and support to prospective landlords to navigate challenging and ever-changing housing.
